Preparing for your Lactation Appointment
You will be meeting with our lactation consultant, Kat, who is an International Board Certified Lactation Consultant (IBCLC) and Pediatric RN. She will help you work toward your feeding goals. Your initial consultation will last between 60-90min.
Depending on your needs, your consultation may include: a health history of you and your baby, a physical exam of your breasts, flange measurements, an oral exam of your baby, a weight check, a feeding assessment, a transfer weight after feeding, and a plan to address your concerns and facilitate your feeding goals.
Please bring:
- A hungry baby. The purpose of the consultation is to feed your baby under observation. This will help determine appropriate interventions.
- Wear comfortable clothing to allow for easy access for feeding or skin-to-skin contact with your baby.
- Equipment. Bring any tools you have been using to assist with feeding, e.g., nipple shield, nursing pillow, or milk collector. Bring your pump and pump pieces to assist in any pumping questions.
- Bottle with pumped breast milk or formula if your baby is supplementing with the bottle after feeds.
- A partner or support person. If available, bring someone to help take notes and remember to ask the questions that you may forget.
- Questions. Write down any questions you have to make sure we can address all of your concerns.
We will communicate and work with your baby’s Primary Care Provider (PCP) for
continuity regarding your baby’s health and plan of care. Follow up
appointments with lactation or your PCP can be scheduled as needed. We look
forward to seeing you!
